Learn more about Choghadiya

See the frequently asked questions below to learn more about Choghadiya.

What is a Choghadiya?

A Choghadiya indicates the quality of time at any given moment. A Choghadiya reveals whether a certain time of day is good or bad; auspicious or inauspicious; beneficial or harmful.

Depending on the Choghadiya for a specific time, you could make an informed decision about whether it is advisable to start a new task or activity to ensure positive results. Conversely, Choghadiya can be reviewed in advance to determine the most favorable time to begin important tasks or activities for a given date.

Choghadiya is also sometimes referred to as Muhurat or Muhurta.

It is a common religious practice among Hindus to consult Choghadiya before undertaking any significant task or activity such as:

  • performing a ceremony (e.g. engagement, wedding, baby shower, pooja, etc.)
  • moving into a new home
  • making big capital investments
  • embarking on a journey (e.g. traveling for work, relocating to a foreign country, etc.)
  • starting a new project
  • scheduling a job interview

and so on.

What are different types of Choghadiya?

There are seven different Choghadiya that rotate throughout the day. Four of them are considered good or auspicious, while the remaining three are bad or inauspicious.

Good Choghadiya

It is advisable to start new task or activity, for positive results, when one of these four Choghadiya is active:

  • Amrit
  • Shubh
  • Labh
  • Chal

Bad Choghadiya

Any important task or activity should be avoided when one of these three Choghadiya is active:

  • Udveg
  • Rog
  • Kaal

Additional considerations

Interestingly enough, there are provisions for certain types of activities that are more suitable for each of the seven Choghadiya, including the ones identified as "bad."

To complicate things further, there are three additional qualifiers that make all seven Choghadiya unfavorable, and therefore should be avoided completely. They are:

  • Vaar Vela
  • Kaal Vela
  • Kaal Ratri

These occurances are associated with certain Choghadiya on specific days, and repeat weekly.

Note that Vaar Vela and Kaal Vela occur during the day time, while Kaal Ratri occurs during the night time.
